IBIS Internal Ostendo Backup System
Designed Specifically for Firebird SQL
Whenever we install Ostendo Continuum, we also deploy our IBIS Internal Ostendo Backup System as standard.
This system safely performs live backups of the Ostendo Firebird SQL database throughout the day while Ostendo Continuum remains running. In the event of a restore, this significantly reduces data loss—typically to just a few hours of activity since the last backup.
Importantly, this is an internal backup mechanism only. Its sole function is to create reliable Ostendo database backup files in designated folders, which can then be captured by your existing backup solution.
Why This Matters
Ostendo Continuum runs on Firebird SQL, which is not VSS-aware. Live backups performed by VSS-based backup tools (such as ShadowProtect) can:
- Cause database corruption
- Result in backup files that cannot be restored
For this reason, we strongly recommend that:
- The Ostendo Operations database is installed on a drive partition excluded from VSS-based backups
- The IBIS Internal Ostendo Backup System is used to generate safe backup files for your broader backup strategy
This approach dramatically reduces the risk of silent backup failures and database integrity issues.
IBIS Monitoring System
Proactive Protection for Your Ostendo Services
Whenever we install Ostendo Continuum, the IBIS Internal Ostendo Backup System, or any Ostendo Services (API, Queue, or Web Services), we also install the IBIS Monitoring System.
System events such as password changes, Windows updates, service interruptions, or system crashes can silently stop critical services from running. If unnoticed, this can lead to failed integrations or missed database backups.
The IBIS Monitoring System actively:
- Monitors the IBIS Internal Ostendo Backup System
- Monitors all installed Ostendo Services (API, Queue, Web Services)
- Sends alerts if any service stops running
- Automatically helps keep services running during system events that would normally interrupt them
This proactive monitoring minimises the risk of unnoticed backup failures or service outages, providing an additional layer of protection for your Ostendo environment.
